Daesung Speaks About New Album, BIGBANG, Marriage, and More in People Study Episode

As the ninth guest of the People Study series by host, actress, entrepreneur, and comedian Hong Jinkyung, Daesung revealed fun tidbits about his personal life, his experiences as a BIGBANG member, his new album, and more.

Daesung debuted in 2006 as the lead vocalist of BIGBANG.

Aside from being a member of one of the most successful K-pop idol groups ever to exist, Daesung also became known as D-Lite, his Japanese stage name. He released two studio albums in Japan, D’scover (2013) and D’slove (2014), aside from several more extended plays, singles, and video albums.

On March 5, he released the official music video for his latest single, ‘Falling Slowly’ from a 2-track single album of the same title.

He has since been making rounds in several Korean shows to promote his new album. After all, this is his first single album released in Korea after focusing on his career in Japan for many years. In December 2023, he released a special digital single, ‘Flow’.

There was certainly no dull moment in Daesung’s People Study interview. Being a funny man himself, it was a great exchange between him and equally funny comedian Jinkyung.

The host mentioned guesting Daesung previously on a radio show and asking the idol if he had a girlfriend. She said she was scolded in the past because idols shouldn’t be asked such questions. This time, Jinkyung didn’t hesitate to ask if Daesung intended to get married.

The singer answered, “Absolutely, I want to get married before 40. I planned that since I was young–to have a family.”

He further added, “It's much happier, I think in a humane way. The people around me, they recommend marriage to me as well.”

Jinkyung also mentioned his BIGBANG co-member, Taeyang, who is married to Min Hyorin, to which Daesung replied, “Yeah, he says he's happy, when you see the person, you can tell that he became better.”

Here’s a photo from Taeyang’s wedding CL shared on Instagram. She was with Daesung, G-Dragon, and T.O.P.

Daesung continued to share what a typical day is like for him. He wakes up early and eats a spoonful of honey. He would work out and take his lessons afterward - Japanese, English, and vocal training. He also likes drinking alone in the evening.

He was asked who he hung out with recently. Daesung mentioned the unofficial ‘Gun-Bang’ group they formed in the military – Taeyang, Joo Won, Beenzino, and Go Kyung-pyo, and how they are now friends.

He also spoke about the musical drama, ‘What’s Up’ that he starred in when he was in his 20’s. He said he sees the cast members regularly, including Queen of Tears star Kim Ji-won.

Daesung shared that since he became busy with solo activities, he barely gets the chance to speak with other BIGBANG members. Since he left YG, he usually speaks to other members about their contracts. He said, “When we call each other, we just cheer for each other.”

When asked what it was like to be a part of BIGBANG and their massive success, Daesung said, “I think it goes for everyone. I think we feel it after everything. At that time, we had a tight schedule. As we experienced our popularity, we couldn't go out or anything. And our mindset at that time, we didn't think it was time to enjoy ourselves. We thought we had another step ahead of us.”

The singer shared that the most memorable stage for him would be BIGBANG’s last tour before he enlisted in the military. He said, “We released a single called ‘Last Dance’ [and] we were on our last tour. Even at that time, when you go serve in the military, they say that your popularity stops after you come back. We didn't know that we could ever have such a performance of that scale again.”

He added, “By the end of the concert, [I wanted] to remember the moment as much as possible, I looked around as much as I could, and that lingered on for a long time.”

Jinkyung told Daesung that she is a huge fan of BIGBANG and collected all of their albums. She said, “Even now, when I listen to Big Bang songs, it's so trendy.”

Daesung said, “I feel like I'm blessed. Even if you actively work, the fact that many people can remember you, it's not like it depends on our intentions.”

He further added his thoughts on BIGBANG's comeback in 2022, “When ‘Still Life’ came out in Korea, more than ourselves, when you watch those reaction videos, there were more people crying than our members. With their memories, they reminisce with our song. I thought that we are so blessed as singers.”

In typical Jinkyung fashion, the host just had to very randomly ask about Daesung’s ideal type, to which he replied, “My ideal type, rather than fancy, I want a plain and innocent person.”

Before closing the interview, Daesung sang a part of his latest single, ‘Falling Slowly’.

He explained what the song meant and what he thought about when he wrote the lyrics, “The lyrics are about, when we're in a relationship, the emotion that we had when we're fighting, we don't understand all [of them], then [we] move on. After the break up, [we think], ‘Ah, I was like that back then’, and you get to understand the other now. That happens. Those emotions. I wanted to write the lyrics about it.”
