From Red Velvet's Wendy to NCT's Ten... "SBS Gayo Daejeon" Causes Another Accident

SBS's 'Gayo Daejeon' caused another accident.

SBS hosted the "2023 SBS Gayo Daejeon" live on December 25th at the Inspire Arena in Yeongjongdo, Incheon. A number of Kpop popular groups appeared, including TVXQ, SHINee, NCT, (G)I-DLE, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, NewJeans, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, ZEROBASEONE, RIIZE, The Boyz, ATEEZ, ITZY, STAYC, aespa, ENHYPEN, NMIXX, and BOYNEXTDOOR.

The lineup was spectacular, but the nightmare of the 2019 accident involving Wendy was recreated when Ten, a member of NCT, was about to perform "Baggy Jeans" and fell to a lift that had gone down the stage.

Ten's fall was not captured on live camera, but the sightings and videos filmed by the audience were posted online, raising criticism of the production team behind "Gayo Daejeon."

In this regard, SBS has not announced its official position until the 26th, the next day. Attention is focusing on when the organizer will take care of the situation.

What reassured the surprised fans was Ten, the victim of the crash. "I'm fine. Don't worry. I'll tell you right away if it really hurts," Ten said on his fan communication platform after the accident.

It is the first time in four years that a crash occurred during the performance of "Gayo Daejeon". Wendy, a member of Red Velvet, was injured during a rehearsal for her solo performance of SBS' "Music Awards Festival" on Dec. 25, 2019. According to the staff at the scene, Wendy had to go up the stairs of the lift through the second floor tunnel and stand by, but the lift was not coming up and crashed. It was suspected that safety management was poor on site.

Wendy moved to the hospital immediately after the accident for a thorough examination, and was found to have facial injuries, pelvis fractures, and wrist fractures. She was hospitalized and treated, and recovered after a long period of treatment, inevitably absent from her scheduled activities such as the Red Velvet World Tour the following year.

On the day of the Wendy's fall, SBS said, "Red Velvet's Wendy was injured during a pre-rehearsal. We sincerely apologize to fans and viewers that Red Velvet will not be able to perform on the live stage of the music competition. We hope Wendy gets well soon, and SBS will pay special attention to safety management in the future." Although the organization was the starting point of the accident, it made a mistake to omit a detailed explanation of the accident and an apology to Wendy, the victim of the accident.

As criticism from viewers and fans intensified, SBS said in an official press release on December 26, the next day, "An unfortunate accident occurred during the rehearsal of 'Gayo Daejeon'. In response, SBS would like to express its sincere apology not only to injured Red Velvet's Wendy, but also to family members, Red Velvet members and fans. Above all, since Wendy's recovery is a priority, SBS's entertainment manager and production team are doing their best for proper treatment in close consultation with their agency SM."

"Immediately after the accident on the 25th, the production team controlled the scene and urgently transferred Wendy to the hospital for a thorough examination through 119 reports." "In order to find out the exact truth about the accident, SBS has launched an internal investigation, and we will take special care to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future through thorough investigation of the cause," they said. "Wendy is hospitalized at a general hospital in downtown Seoul for examination and treatment at the same time. SBS promises to make every effort for a speedy recovery under consultation with Wendy's family and medical staff," they added.
